Day 1

PARIS - BUCAREST

Arrival Bucharest according to flight schedule.

Transfer to hotel. Check-in, dinner on your own.

Day 2

BUCAREST / SINAIA / BRAN / BRASOV

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure for Brasov via Sinaia, the "Pearl of the Carpathians", a famous spa in the Prahova valley.

Visit to PELES castle. Built at the end of the 19th century by King Carol I as a royal summer residence, this elegant neo-Renaissance castle is richly furnished and decorated with weapons, porcelain and tapestries, as well as an extensive collection of paintings.

Lunch in a local restaurant.

Drive through Transylvania, one of Romania's most mysterious regions. Situated in the center of Romania and surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, it has been inhabited by Hungarians, Saxons and Armenians, resulting in a rich mix of cultures.

Visit BRAN Castle. Arguably Romania's most famous medieval castle, Bran was built in the 14th century by the inhabitants of Brasov on the trade route between Wallachia and Transylvania. After the 2nd World War, the castle became the property of Queen Marie of Romania, who made it the royal family's summer residence. But the castle's history is also linked to Count Vlad Tepes, also known as Dracula, who, according to legend, spent a few nights here.

Day 3

BRASOV / PREJMER / RED LAKE / BICAZ / PIATRA NEAMT

Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning guided tour of BRASOV. Founded in the 13th century, the town was transformed by Saxon settlers and renamed Kronstadt. Today, it's a pleasant provincial town with a well-preserved architectural heritage, including a few bastions of its ancient fortified citadel. The main building is the 14th-century Gothic Black Church (exterior view), whose outer walls were blackened by fire in 1689. Other highlights include the Place du Conseil, the Bastion des Tisserands and St. Nicolas church.

Continuation to the fortified church of Prejmer, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This Lutheran church is the largest Saxon fortification in Transylvania. Built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights in Gothic style, it was fortified in the 15th century with walls 5 meters thick. The church's altarpiece is particularly noteworthy.

Drive to the Bicaz Gorge. Particularly narrow, these gorges are Romania's most impressive cliffs, reaching heights of over 1100m. Pass through the Red Lake, formed by an earthquake and landslide in 1838. The lake takes its name from the sunken fir trees whose dry branches turn red with age. Even today, cut tree trunks can be seen emerging from the water.

Then on to Piatra Neamt, former capital of Moldavia. Check-in at the hotel. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4

PIATRA NEAMT / BUCOVINE / GURA HUMORULUI

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure for Bucovina, the region of painted monasteries.

Stop at the Agapia monastery, Romania's largest monastic complex. The interior frescoes were painted by Nicolae Grigorescu a few years before he left for Barbizon to meet the precursors of French Realism, including Jean-François Millet. Then a detour to Tarpesti to visit the house of Nicolae Popa, a popular creator of traditional masks and one of the leading names in Romanian naive art.

Arrival in Bucovina, cradle of an ancient civilization where history is linked to legends, and famous for its monasteries with painted exterior frescoes. These are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Voronet, Arbore, Humor, Moldovita, Sucevita, Putna and Dragomirna. The frescoes depict biblical and religious scenes.

Visit the VORONET monastery, the most famous of them all, nicknamed the "Sistine Chapel of the East". Its western wall features a fresco of the "Last Judgement", painted in 1547 on an original blue background.

Visit the monastery of MOLDOVITA, whose frescoes in gold and blue depict the "Siege of Constantinople" and the "Tree of Jesse".

Road to the village of Sadova, nestling in the heart of Bucovina.

Meet the locals and learn about their daily lives and customs.

Dinner of traditional dishes and tasting of the local brandy, afinata. Check-in at a guesthouse for the night.

Day 5

GURA HUMORULUI / BISTRIRA / TARGU MURES

Breakfast at the hotel.

Road to Transylvania via the Tihuta pass and its beautiful wild landscapes.

Stop off in the village of Ciocanesti to admire the traditional decorations painted by the locals on the walls of their museum. Stroll through the village and visit the painted egg museum.

Arrival in Bistrita, one of Transylvania's seven medieval cities, founded by Saxon settlers in 1206.

Lunch at the restaurant, then on to Targu Mures.

On arrival, take a walking tour of Targu Mures, starting with Rose Alley, the Plaia of Culture, the Orthodox and Catholic cathedrals and the ancient Mures fortress.

Check-in and dinner at the hotel.

Day 6

TARGU MURES / SIGHISOARA / BIERTAN / SIBIU

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Sighisoara.

Guided tour of SIGHISOARA. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Sighisoara is the only medieval Romanian town still inhabited. It was built in 1191 by Saxon settlers and has preserved its citadel intact. The citadel is home to the 14th-century Clock Tower, now the town's museum, the Gothic Hill Church, reached by the 175-step wooden school staircase, and the birthplace of Count Vlad Tepes, known as Dracula. These narrow streets give the town a timeless charm, plunging visitors into the heart of the Middle Ages. Drive to Sibiu, stopping to visit the fortified church of Biertan, founded by the Saxon settlers of Transylvania and listed by UNESCO.

Lunch in a local restaurant, then on to Sibiu.

Guided walking tour of SIBIU. The cradle of Saxon civilization in 1150, the medieval city of Sibiu (formerly Hermannstadt) was equipped with 39 defensive towers to face Turkish invasions. Today, it is the largest city in Transylvania. Discover the exterior of the Brukhental Palace, built in 1787 in the Baroque style, which today houses an exciting museum of paintings, books and valuable objets d'art. Also in the historic heart of the city are the Council Tower, the Town Hall, the Evangelical Church, the Bridge of Lies, the stairway linking the Upper and Lower Towns.

Day 7

SIBIU / BUCAREST

Breakfast at the hotel.

Then off to Bucharest, the Romanian capital, through the Olt valley and its exceptional natural surroundings.

Lunch in town on arrival.

Stroll through the pedestrian district of Lipscani, the historic heart of the capital built around the Curtea Veche (Princely Court), the former residence of the Vlach princes founded in the 15th century and once a transit point and crossroads between the trade routes of East and West, with its beautiful 19th-century buildings and old mansions with wrought-iron balconies.
